How to use rsync for Transferring Files and Folders

The tool rsync is very useful to synchronize files and directories from one location to another. It minimizes the data transfer using delta encoding when appropriate. Mirroring a directory takes place with only one transmission in each direction. Optionally you can make use of compression and recursion during the transfer. You can install rsync from the ports directory.

Root access is required to edit the following files and to execute commands. Log in as root (su) or simply prepend sudo to all commands that require root privileges.

Transfer files and directories with rsync

Please replace 123.123.123.123 with the remote IP and the directories with your locations. The option -var will transfer verbose in archive mode and recurse into directories. Optionally pipe the output to /dev/null.

rsync -var /local/directory/ 123.123.123.123:/remote/directory/ > /dev/null &
